The UCSC Fire Department previously offered comprehensive CPR, AED, and First Aid training for the campus community as part of the department's public education program. With the implementation of the campus' Agreement for Fire Protection and Emergency Response Services with the City of Santa Cruz and the closure of the UCSC Fire Department, this program has ended.

The newly formed UCSC Office of Emergency Services (OES) has been managing the transition of this program along with other former Fire Department programs. After examining several alternative training options, OES is excited to announce that the Recreation Department of the Office of Physical Education, Recreation & Sports (OPERS) has agreed to become the primary CPR, AED, and First Aid training provider for the campus through an expansion of their existing American Heart Association training program.

The Recreation Department has already begun this transition and is working with Colleges, Housing, and Educational Services (CHES) to provide mandatory training for housing staff as they return to campus this month. Classes for other campus units and individuals will begin after the start of the 2014 Fall Quarter. Please check the Recreation Department website for class offerings and more details at that time. In addtion, the cpr@ucsc.edu email account formerly used by the UCSC Fire Department has been transferred to the Recreation Department and can be used to contact them for training needs.

OES is excited to be able to partner with OPERS to ensure that that this critical training remains available to the campus community and is working closely with OPERS throughout this transition. OES will continue to promote CPR, AED, and First Aid training as a critical part of the overall campus emergency preparedness program.
